The Republic Cigar Lounge Story
In the fall of 2011 Sammy Falletta got the idea to get into the cigar business. As he began to consider this endeavor, he quickly realized that he would need assistance. He called his good friend Richard Skidmore and presented the idea, Richard agreed that he had considered this before and thought it would be a noteworthy adventure, and a lot of fun.
After considering some locations in San Marcos, we determined that New Braunfels would offer a more suitable location. Upon doing a market survey we found the Gruene area to offer the most desirable location and opportunity. We found a great location in The Gruene Lake Village; however, it was unavailable, we looked at other places, but found none that offered everything we needed. Cigar business got placed on the backburner and pretty much forgotten.
Several months later, right around June, Richard and our other mutual good friend Tony Zahtila were celebrating Richard’s birthday and Richard presented the cigar business idea to Tony. Tony agreed that he would enjoy being involved in this and the “Original Three” was born. Soon afterward we got a call from the owner of the location we wanted at Gruene, and the space was now available. After a business strategy session, that involved lots of cigars and adult beverage, plans were placed on paper, business entity formed, and we were on our way to New Braunfels.
With the assistance of our significant others, The Republic Cigar opened on December 5th, 2012. Seven years later our location has expanded, and size of our humidor has tripled. The “Original Three” are still great friends and we continue to thrive in Gruene thanks to our great patrons, whom we affectionately refer to as, brothers and sisters of the leaf.
